Class Overview:
This weekly class (or “office hours” if you will) provides a safe, structured setting for training around other dogs and unfamiliar people, facilitated by a Certified Canine Behavior Consultant. It’s ideal for dogs who need practice staying calm amid distractions, excitable or frustrated greeters, shy or sensitive dogs building confidence through positive exposure, and dogs preparing for service or therapy roles.
You set your own agenda by choosing the skills you want to work on—focus, loose leash walking, relaxed downs, greeting manners, or other priorities—and I’ll provide individualized coaching for those who request it. There’s no set curriculum; if several teams share a goal, we may work on that together briefly as a group.
The Bandana System
To keep class safe and clear, each dog will wear a color-coded bandana that signals how much space the handler would like. The colors do not necessarily indicate temperament. They are simply a way to communicate comfort levels and space needs. The only exception is green, which should always indicate a dog who is safe around both people and other dogs.
- Green Bandana: The handler is open to dog-dog greetings, and the dog is friendly and comfortable with close interactions. These dogs may be eligible for limited indoor play depending on the day’s setup. Always ask before allowing your dog to greet another, even if both are wearing green.
- Yellow Bandana: The handler requests a few feet of space from other dogs, unless two handlers agree to work together.
- Red Bandana: The handler requires at least 10 feet of space from other dogs, and often more. Red does not mean unfriendly; many dogs simply need extra distance due to over-excitement, fear, or anxiety.
Weather & Space: When weather permits outdoor sessions, we can accommodate the full class with ample room for everyone. If we need to move indoors due to inclement weather, available spots become more limited. In those cases, RSVPs will be honored in the order received. Please watch your email or text for weather-related updates before class.
Need-to-Know Details:
- Dogs of all ages are welcome.
- All dogs must be current on age-appropriate vaccinations.
- For everyone’s safety, dogs will be kept at a safe distance by default. Please ask before letting your dog greet another, even if they are wearing a green bandana.
