Class Details

Help your dog develop emotional control through calmness, self-regulation, and polite behavior. This 5-week specialty course is designed for friendly, social dogs over 6 months old who have difficulty settling or need a new environment to practice impulse control. You'll learn how to encourage calm behavior by “capturing” signs of relaxation and reinforcing them—an approach that differs from teaching traditional cues like “sit” or “down.”

Throughout the course, you'll gain a deeper understanding of how stress and arousal influence your dog’s behavior, and you'll develop strategies for managing arousal in everyday life and challenging situations.

Each class is divided into two parts: the first half focuses on building impulse control with skills like “leave it,” “stay,” and “place,” while the second half centers on capturing calmness and reinforcing the “settle” behavior. As dogs progress, carefully chosen distractions will be introduced to help strengthen their skills.

What to Bring:

  • Treats or rewards for your dog

  • Current vaccination records

  • All family members are welcome and encouraged to participate!

A text message and welcome email with preparation details will be sent approximately one week before class begins.

Policies:

No refunds or credits will be given for missed sessions. However, an email summary of the skills covered will be provided. If North Star cancels a session, a makeup class will be scheduled.
