Have you ever wondered whether your dog would enjoy therapy work? Therapy dogs visit a variety of settings, including hospitals, schools, nursing homes, libraries, and community events. This class is designed to help teams develop the skills needed for therapy visits while providing guidance on certification options and helping handlers determine whether this type of volunteer work is a good fit for their dog.
Class Details:
This course is limited to 5 teams, and is designed for dogs with a solid training foundation and a calm, reliable temperament suitable for therapy work. Dogs with reactive tendencies or a history of aggressive behavior are not eligible for this class. Instructor approval is required prior to registration. Dogs over 6 months are welcome to enroll, however most certification tests require the dog to be over a year old.
Classes will focus on developing calm, reliable behavior in a variety of environments and situations. Training will include:
Exposure to medical equipment
Handling unexpected situations
Interacting with unfamiliar people and dogs, and individuals simulating injuries
Building confidence and reliability in diverse therapy settings
To enhance real-world preparedness, one class will take place in a public location, such as Lowe’s.
Certification Opportunities:
The “Control Evaluation” test (click here for more info), a requirement for Love on a Leash certification, will be offered.
Information on several therapy dog organizations and certification pathways will be provided to help you determine your next steps after completing the course.
Important Note:
Participation in this class does not guarantee that your dog will qualify as a therapy dog. However, it will provide valuable practice, exposure, and feedback to help you assess your dog's readiness for certification and volunteer work.
A text message and welcome email with preparation details will be sent approximately one week before the class begins.
Policies: No refunds or credits will be given for missed sessions. However, an email summary of the skills covered will be provided. If North Star cancels a session, a makeup class will be scheduled.
