This 5-week course is designed for dogs over 6 months old who are in the early stages of training. The curriculum is similar to that of Puppy Essentials, but with a stronger emphasis on proofing behaviors. While there are no interactive play sessions, the controlled environment offers valuable exposure to other dogs, enhancing your dog’s training experience. There are no prerequisites for this class, but dogs with a history of aggressive or highly reactive behavior are not eligible.

Each week, we will focus on three key behaviors or cues, including:

  • Release cue

  • Proofing basic cues such as sit, down, and stay

  • Layering in distance, duration, distractions

  • “Look at Me” / Increasing eye contact

  • Discussion of dog-dog greetings

  • Hand targeting / Touch

  • “Leave It”

  • Place

  • Leash manners

  • Heel

  • Polite greetings (not jumping)

  • Discussion of the importance of enrichment, with examples

  • Preventing or recovering from resource guarding

  • Recall

Whether your dog is learning these skills for the first time or needs a chance to refine them, this class provides personalized instruction to meet their needs.

What to Bring:

  • Treats or rewards for your dog

  • Current vaccination records

  • All family members are welcome and encouraged to participate!

A text message and welcome email with preparation details will be sent approximately one week before class begins.

Policies:

No refunds or credits will be given for missed sessions. However, an email summary of the skills covered will be provided. If North Star cancels a session, a makeup class will be scheduled.
