This 5-week class is designed for dogs with a solid foundation of basic training who are ready to take their skills to the next level. Whether you’re interested in pursuing the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) title or simply want a dog who is more confident and polite in public settings, this class is for you.
The final session will include the optional CGC test. All enrolled dogs will attend the final class, regardless of whether they choose to test.
Dogs entering this class should already be familiar with basic cues such as sit, down, stay, and come, and should have begun working on leash manners. These skills do not need to be perfect; this class is designed to strengthen, refine, and build reliability in real-world situations.
Polite greetings and acceptance of strangers
Sitting calmly during greetings
Basic husbandry handling
Loose-leash walking
Walking through a crowd
Sit/stay and down/stay
Recall
Calm behavior around other dogs
Focus and responsiveness around distractions
Brief separation from the handler

Click HERE for the full list of CGC skills. Don’t forget to bring treats for your pup and a current vaccination record! While treats are encouraged during training, they are not allowed during the CGC test, as per AKC rules. Only flat collars or harnesses are permitted during the test (no face halters, prong collars, etc.).
Family members are invited (and encouraged) to attend. You will receive both a text message and a welcome email about a week before class begins, containing all the information you need to be prepared. There are no credits or refunds for missed sessions. An email will be sent summarizing the skills we covered. If a session is canceled by North Star, a makeup class will be provided.
